Windows Explorer allows you to manage process that provides the graphical interface you use to interact, such as the Start menu, notification area, taskbar, and File Explorer. Quick methods to restart Explorer.exe

There are several ways by which you can quickly restart the Explorer.exe process to fix UI problems. You can use Task manager or batch files to know how to restart Explorer.exe windows 10.

Restarting Explorer using Processes tab

You can resolve Explorer.exe system call failed error with the Processes tab. This will also help you to solve some common UI issues on Windows 10. For this, follow the steps given below:

  • Press the Ctrl + Shift + ESC keys to open the Task Manager. You can also click on the empty space at your desktop’s taskbar and select Task Manager to open it.
  • If you're using the Task Manager in compact mode, click on the More details button from the bottom-left corner.
  • Now, navigate to the Processes tab and select the Windows Explorer process from the "Windows processes" section.
  • Click the Restart button from the bottom-right corner.

Once you have successfully completed the above steps, the Windows Explorer process will terminate and restart automatically. It will also solve many other issues, such as Start menu won't open or unable to interact with the taskbar or File Explorer.

Restarting Explorer using Details tab

If you are facing Explorer.exe class not registered issue on your system, you can restart the application using the Details tab. For restarting the Explorer.exe file using the details tab, follow the steps given below:

  • Use the Ctrl + Shift + ESC keys simultaneously to open Task Manager. If you are using Task Manager in compact mode, click on the More details button from the bottom-left corner.
  • Navigate to the Details tab and right-click on the explorer.exe process and select the End task option from the list that appeared on screen.
  • Now, tap the End process button and then click the File menu, and choose Run new task option.
  • To restart the process, type explorer.exe and click OK button.

Once you have restarted the Explorer.exe file, check whether its freezing and other issues are resolved.

How do I reset Explorer.exe using batch file

You can also create a batch file that contains some set of commands to automatically terminate and restart the Windows Explorer. If you want to resolve Explorer.exe system call failed error, follow the steps given below:

  • Click on the Start icon at the bottom-right corner of your desktop. Locate and open Notepad from the list of application that appeared on screen.
  • Copy and paste the below-given script to the text file:
    • taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
    • start explorer.exe
  • Click the File menu, and choose the Save As option and save your file with any descriptive name with a .bat file extension
  • After entering your file name, click on the Save button.

Quick steps to restart Windows Explorer using Command Prompt

Follow the steps given below if you want to restart explorer.exe using Command Prompt.

  • Press Win + X keys and select Command Prompt (Admin) to run Command Prompt with Administrative privileges.
  • Type taskkill /f /im explorer.exe command, and then press the Enter key. This command will stop the explorer.exe process
  • Type the start explorer.exe command to start the Windows Explorer process.

Once the above commands are properly executed, you can easily restart Windows Explorer whenever you need to.
